How to store comics so they stay near-mint

Condition is everything with comics, and condition is mostly about storage. A comic that is read carefully and stored well can stay near-mint for decades; the same comic left in a warm loft or a sunny windowsill will yellow, curl and lose grade in a season. The good habits are cheap and quick, and they pay off whether you are keeping your collection or trading it in later.

Bag and board every copy you care about. A polypropylene bag keeps out dust and moisture, and a backing board stops the comic bending — together they are the single biggest thing you can do. Store the bagged copies upright, like books on a shelf, not stacked in a heavy pile where the ones at the bottom take all the weight. Standing them vertically protects the spine, which is the first thing a grader checks.

Watch the environment as much as the handling. Keep comics out of direct sunlight, away from radiators and out of damp spaces like garages and lofts. A stable room temperature and normal indoor humidity is ideal; heat and moisture are what cause tanning and cockling. Handle copies by the edges with clean, dry hands, and never dog-ear a page to mark your place.
